1, improve wear resistance. One of the most remarkable properties of high molecular weight polyethylene (MWPE) is its high wear resistance, which is very valuable in many engineering applications. In all plastics, its wear resistance is better, even many metal materials (such as carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, etc.) regular wear resistance is not as good as it. With the increase of molecular weight of polyethylene, the material becomes more wearable.


2. High impact resistance. The impact strength of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is related to its molecular weight. When the molecular weight is lower than 2 million, the impact strength will reach a peak value of about 2 million with the molecular weight being longer, and then the impact strength will decrease with the increase of molecular weight. This is due to the fact that molecular chains sometimes interfere with their photocrystallization, so that there is a large amorphous region in the macromolecule which can absorb a large impact energy.


According to the literature, the impact strength values of UHMWPE and other plastics determined by ASTM-D256 method are compared. The results show that the impact resistance of UHMWPE at room temperature can be classified as the same as that of polyester, which is famous for its impact resistance. UHMWPE is widely used in engineering plastics. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has a strong impact resistance even at - 40 C, even at - 269 C, it can still maintain a good impact resistance. This excellent low temperature characteristic makes the application of UHMWPE extended to the field of low temperature engineering.


3, very low friction coefficient. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is an ideal bearing sleeve, slider and lining material with low friction coefficient and good self-lubrication.

4. Good chemical resistance. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has excellent chemical resistance. It will not be corroded in all alkali and acid liquids, and it can be at temperature.


However, UHMWPE is easy to swell in aromatic or halogenated compounds (especially at higher temperatures), so special attention should be paid to its application.


5, very low water absorbency. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has very low water absorption. It is almost non-absorbent, does not expand in water, and has much less water absorption than nylon.


6. Thermal properties. According to the ASTM (load 4.6kg/cm2) method, the hot deformation temperature is 85, the use temperature can reach 90, under a small load, under special circumstances, is allowed to use at higher temperatures, because UHMWPE is a tough material, so its low resistance is also very good, at - 269, low temperature. There is still a certain degree of ductility, but no evidence of embrittlement.


7, electrical properties. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has excellent electrical properties in a wide temperature range. Its volume resistance is 10-18CM, breakdown voltage is 50KV/mm and dielectric constant is 2.3. In a wide range of temperature and frequency, its electrical properties change little. In the heat resistant temperature range, it is suitable for electrical engineering structural materials and paper mill materials.


8. Aseptic UHMWPE is odorless, sterile, odorless, non-corrosive, with physiological and physiological adaptability. FDA and USDA allow it to be used in food and drug contact occasions.


These properties, especially the abrasion resistance, impact resistance and self-lubrication, are good in engineering plastics.
